Chief Risk Officer Major UK Wealth Manager
As part of a wider programme of senior appointments for a large UK wealth business, we undertook to find a new UK CRO. We were asked to provide a Risk director with major Life platform and change experience to lead through a divestment. During the four-week research phase we approached over 180 CROs and Heads of Risk globally, producing a concise list of candidates able to demonstrate the appropriate technical and cultural values. Our client, the group CRO was able to focus on other priorities whilst we executed the hire. We required no more than four hours of his time from start to finish.
Compliance Director Global Private Medical Insurer
Due to an internal merger of global and International brands, our client required a new upskilled Compliance Director to lead the regulatory profile of the combined business. We approached every Compliance Director and Head of Compliance in the International Private Medical Insurance sector to produce a highly accurate short list of four candidates, within a six-week period.
Chief Internal Auditor Major Life Firm
Reporting to the Group Chief Internal Auditor, Lutine Bell were commissioned to undertake a search to find the new Chief Internal Auditor for one of the largest investment management brands in the world. Our search team spoke to every senior internal auditor in the investment management and life and pensions space. Producing a long list of 300 auditors globally earning c.£150,000. We executed the short list and successful hire in under 10 weeks from first approach to offer and acceptance.
Head of Risk Major Investment Manager
As part of a dual search, we were commissioned by the Group Exco of a major UK Insurance firm to find the new position of Head of Risk for their 100 billion AUM fund manager. The unique element of this mandate required us to find candidates able to evidence not only Operational Risk but 1st line Investment risks as well as enterprise (group) level reporting. The role also acted as a sponsor between group and the business unit.
Culturally the candidate needed to represent the 1st and 2nd line requirements of the fund manager whilst also representing the risk appetite of the Insurance group.
We undertook a painstaking search leaving no stone unturned across the retail investment sector highlighting 150 candidates comprising three short lists of five candidates, the entire process was delivered on time and below budget.
Head of Risk Management / Head of Compliance Dual Search - UK Wealth Manager
Following the acquisition of a leading IFA Network, Lutine Bell were instructed by the newly appointed CRO to appoint both a Head of Risk Management and the Head of Compliance. We immediately appointed an interim consultant to support the Head of Risk Management & Compliance vacancies.
During a six-week research phase, Lutine Bell contacted over 200 risk & compliance leaders from the wealth management, insurance and retail banking sector to produce two shortlists. Following the successful appointment of both roles, the interim consultant provided a brief hand-over period to ensure continuity, before exiting the business.
Chief Risk Officer Fund Manager
A highly sensitive process. Lutine Bell were asked by the Group Board of a composite financial services business to provide due diligence and bench marking in relation to their Fund Manager’s Risk and Compliance leadership.
Without divulging our clients identity, we carefully approached peer group Risk & Compliance directors to gauge interest levels. During the process, we spoke to the majority of senior Risk and Compliance officers in the UK Asset management sector earning £130 – £200,000 (2016).
Interim Chief Risk Officer Discretionary Fund Manager
Following the acquisition of a discretionary fund manager by one of the leading UK Wealth Managers, Lutine Bell were asked to provide an Interim CRO during the integration phase, focusing on the design and implementation of a new Risk and Compliance Framework, in line with the parent business. The role required us to provide a highly experienced / sensibly over qualified interim CRO with the broad knowledge and capacity to implement change.
Group Data Privacy Director Major UK Insurance firm
As part of the preparation for 2018 GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), the ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) stipulated that every firm involved in the regular and systematic processing of data subjects on a large scale must appoint a DPO (Data Privacy Officer).
We were pleased to be asked to consult with the Group Board of directors to help write the job specification and effectively position the appointment to unify their approach to data privacy across all legal entities.
We provided one of our Data Protection Associates to undertake a free Data Governance Health Check. Following this an Interim DPO (6 months) from a similar scale organisation was appointed by Lutine Bell, whilst we undertook the search. During the search process (our 6th DPO appointment to date 2017) we reached critical mass across the UK candidate demographic; we had effectively spoken to every credible data protection professional in the UK Market across all sectors. We provided short lists for both regional and relocation candidates and successfully executed the hire inside of 10 weeks.

Head of Financial Crime and Data Protection Major UK Insurer
For this search we were asked to combine the role of DPO with a Head of Financial Crime to be based in either Manchester or Glasgow. We immediately found the eleven candidates currently holding both titles, in the UK Financial services market, and preceded to undertake a creative and meticulous search of every retail financial institution in the UK that might hold personnel with a similar mandate. We embarked on both a relocation exercise and specific regional search for either location.
During this process our research team uncovered a jaw dropping 108 candidates, 34 in the midlands, 12 in Scotland, 62 UK wide. This involved over 70 hours of phone work and 30 hours of interviews resulting in three short listed candidates. The hire was executed under budget without the need to relocate a candidate.
Our client only needed to spend four hours of his time in this process.
Chief Risk officer Public Sector Insurer
We were very proud to be invited to undertake a search for the new Head of Risk (now CRO) of a newly forming Insurance pool designed to provide victims of flood damage a realistic option for future insurance.
- With none of the usual structures typically associated with larger insurers, we promoted the prospect of joining a public sector business with a strong ethical and moral focus.
- We set out speaking to a predominantly London market candidate list, looking for rising stars in the larger firms who were interested in a new and highly publicised challenge.
- We spoke to every Head of Risk in the Lloyds and London Insurance market earning £80 – £100,000 and executed the hire on time and on budget.
Interim CRO UK Health Insurer
Working for the UK’s largest private medical insurer, we were asked to provide a sensibly over qualified Interim CRO to manage the transition between UK and Group 2nd lines of defence. We selected five interim CRO’s from the UK general insurance sector, able to parachute into the business with immediate effect and for a period of 12 months. Lutine Bell then managed the executive search for the new Chief Risk Officer.
